A space image tool
adieu à l'image: on the flip side of the space-image
a workshop by dband
What kinds of relationships between images and spaces exist, or could exist, under today's media conditions?
For one week, four participants set out from the Sandleitenhof, a Red Vienna housing complex, with their
smartphone
cameras, searching for a "Situation": a function or activity that once belonged to the place and has since gone
missing, been displaced or replaced by something similar, yet not quite the same.
Their images were carried back into the room we worked in through a custom tool developed for the workshop.
A phone that knows where it stands in the real room places each photograph into a true-scale virtual copy of that
room,
at exactly the position and angle it was taken from, either as a floating image or projected as light onto the
surfaces
of the virtual room.

The phone is not used to scan or replace the physical space; it opens a dialogue between the
physical
and the virtual, and at the threshold between them new gaps appear, where a flat image turns into a space.
Over the week the room became one continuously overwritten image, encountered each time anew while being
remembered
at the same time. The workshop ended in a staged re-enactment: a walk through that image, a passage through
images.
The viewer below is reconstructed from the workshop's own records: the participants' camera walks, their
photographs
placed where they were taken, and a fixed camera that watched the room fill up over the week.
Drag to look around the room, scroll to zoom. Pick a participant to follow their walk, then press ▶ or drag the
timeline.
