ROTE TRÄUME VOM CREME SEHEN

A generative melodrama from the Viennese Gemeindebau. Ongoing.
I have lived in a Gemeindebau for over twenty years. Walking through the new municipal housing the city builds today, I keep noticing an absence. The buildings work, but they say nothing. No courtyards with carpet rails, no passageways with reliefs, none of the colour that once announced: life here is organised differently.

So I trained a generative model exclusively on the visual language of historical Red Vienna, then set it loose on contemporary municipal housing. The dataset is 2,231 photographs I took myself, district by district, courtyard by courtyard, each one captioned by hand. Training ran locally on my own workstation using Flux Klein, a European base model, because I did not want the material leaving for an American cloud.

Year: 2026

Six versions. The first learned nothing. The breakthrough came with version three, when I stopped asking the model to learn content and style at once and let it concentrate on aesthetic transfer alone.

The film itself is not finished. What exists after six months is the foundation: the models, the method, and an architectural reading of what happens when you release an algorithm onto the built city.

Six training runs, each built on the failures of the one before. The first learned nothing at all. Its loss stayed flat at 0.70 for the whole run and the generated images showed no style transfer whatsoever. The breakthrough came from three parameter changes, of which one did most of the work: I stopped asking the model to learn content and style at the same time and let it concentrate on aesthetic transfer alone.
